Stuart L. Fine, M.D. is the William F. Norris and George E. deSchweinitz Professor of Ophthalmology Chairman, Department of Ophthalmology and Director, Scheie Eye Institute at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Fine’s career has focused on mentoring young investigators and leading National Eye Institute-supported multicenter clinical trials to evaluate new and existing treatments for retinal diseases. Among these trials are the Macula Photocoagulation Study (1979-1994), the Collaborative Ocular Melanoma Study (1985-2005), the Choroidal Neovascularization Prevention Trial (1994-1998), and the Complications of AMD Prevention Trial (1999-present). Dr. Fine’s most prominent clinical research interest has been age- related macular degeneration and its treatment. His goal for the next decade is to develop and orchestrate a Clinical Trials Network to evaluate new and emerging treatments for age-related macular degeneration. |
