National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute

The SCCT is a cooperative program of three Specialized Centers, one Data Coordinating Center (DCC) and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). The SCCT is funded through the NHLBI.

The three Specialized Centers awarded the grants and the current Principal Investigators (PI) are:

  • Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX (PI: Malcolm Brenner, M.D., Ph.D.)
  • Johns Hopkins University/University of Miami/Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (PI: Eduardo Marban, M.D., Ph.D.)
  • Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA (PI: Henry Kronenberg, M.D.)

The Specialized Centers are supported by the DCC, The EMMES Corporation (PI: Shelly Carter, Sc.D.).  The DCC maintains continuity of operations and facilitates effective communication.

The SCCT Steering Committee will be the main governing body of the program. The Steering Committee will have primary responsibility for the general organization of the program, facilitating the conduct and monitoring of the protocols and studies, and reporting study results. Additionally, the Steering Committee will be responsible for evaluating clinical protocols, participating in their overall development, conducting the research, and disseminating research findings. The Steering Committee consists of:

  • Steering Committee Chairperson
  • One Principal Investigator and one co-Investigator from each Specialized Center
  • One Principal Investigator from the DCC
  • NHLBI Project Scientists
NOTE: Members of this committee may be assisted by other members of the SCCT staff, DCC staff, representatives from the cellular research community and special consultants.

A Protocol Review Committee (PRC), established by the NHLBI, is responsible for conducting a protocol review before each clinical study is initiated and will monitor patient safety and data analysis.

A Data Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) will review the performance of each study approximately semi-annually.  As part of its monitoring responsibility, the DSMB will submit recommendations to the NHLBI regarding the continuation of each study and prepare a report for the Principal Investigators to provide their Institutional Review Board (IRB).
